Hustling Happy | Startup Selling

Hustling Happy | Startup Selling

By Scott Sambucci | March 22, 2019

Most of the time, I’m all about systems, efficiency and predictability.

But sometimes hustle is just something you gotta do.

I consider myself an introvert. Even when I’m at a conference meeting with twenty new people a day, I have to get myself “up” to face the crowds.

I like working from my office, banging out coaching calls and trainings and Zoom meetings. The local coffee shop is my go-to place to write and do the real work that comes with running the business.

I like knocking out a midday run along Putah Creek, then picking up my son from gymnastics and jiu-jitsu. I like making dinner, doing the dishes and sliding into bed before nine o’clock.

(Okay, I don’t really like doing the dishes, but I do like having a clean kitchen.)

These are all of the small reasons why I do what I do – why I don’t do the 2.5 hour commute to San Francisco anymore or march onto the 5:55am American flight to DFW on Monday mornings, then stagger home late on Thursday after a week onsite with mortgage lenders.

But every once in a while, I know I’ve got to get out of the building and make good things happen, and yesterday was one of those days.

Yesterday was a day during which I literally ran across the city, crisscrossing from downtown to SOMA and back, then back again, from one meeting to the next, dodging Ubers and construction sites, working in calls with a client in Iceland and a soon-to-be client in Chicago, reviewing hiring candidates with my assistant while on the move, then finishing with an evening event.

And with all of that hustle, I received the gift of unplanned, happy collisions.

I ran into the managing director of a startup group I’d talked with last summer. He  happened to share an office with one of our clients – I had no idea they occupied the same space. We ended up talking about a workshop series for their startup teams, and later in the afternoon, he introduced me by email to a company that needs help scaling sales right away. At the evening event, I met a founder and a VP of Sales that need help with growing sales at each of their companies, and want to talk more next week. I met sales executive that recognized me from my book, and another company founder that went to one of my workshops last year came up to say hello.

The day started at 3am, waking up before my alarm, and when I pulled into the driveway at 10:21pm, I felt proud and satisfied that I squeezed ever last drop of good from the day.

I would never, ever want to do this every day or every week. But every so often, it pays to ditch the video calls and email, and just plain hustle.

Go Farther.
