Go Farther Episode #10: Find Your Routine
⏰ I set two AM alarms – 4:00am & 4:01am – so that I don’t let the Snooze button give me nine minutes of comfort. Most days I don’t feel like getting up at 4am but that’s my routine.
That gives me two solid hours before the rest of the house wakes up to focus on my most important work. It’s the reward of the routine. 🌟
I like making my son breakfast and eating an omelet every morning, then leaving the house by 8am for school drop-off so that I can be home for the 8:30am Daily Standup with my team.
🐩 I like knowing when I’m doing the dog walks and hitting the mat for jiu-jitsu class every week. 🤼
I like knowing that I’m heading out to the hills at Pená-Adobe park on Wednesday morning for hill repeats before dawn, and out to the trails on Saturday for long runs where I’ll see deer, peacocks, quail, skunks, rattlesnakes, and occasional mountain lion or bear tracks.
I like knowing that I do school pick-ups on Friday so that my wife can head to the barn 🐴 and that we’ve got soccer practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
I like doing the laundry, running to Trader Joe’s and picking up the house on the weekends.
▶ I like hitting “play” to listen to Rodrigo y Gabriela when I’m writing up my LinkedIn posts, listening to the Glitch Mob while prospecting and chilling with Tycho when I’m doing admin work. The music cues my brain to get to work even when I don’t feel like it. Especially when I don’t feel like it.
I like knowing that I’m going to exercise. Every. Day. No. Matter. What.
That’s my routine. No thinking, no deciding, no procrastinating. Routine conscript me to just act, just go, just do.
Find your routine because motivation is for suckers.
